The Greater Highway Church of Christ in Vander, NC is located at 411 John B. Carter Road on the east side of Fayetteville, NC. The church was founded and built by the late Pastor Alice F. McKinnon in the early 1970s. Pastor McKinnon was working along with the saints of Greater Highway Church Of Christ, Fayetteville before she built the church in Vander. Our church was established upon the teachings of the Apostolic Doctrine, the baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues as the spirit gives utterance. We also believe in living a sanctified life.
In the early years, the church only had a few members: Sister Mable McDonald, Sister Lillie Mae Whitted, Sister Pearlie Whitted, Brother James Harris, Brother Preston Simmons, and a few others. In the early 80s, the Lord began to bless and add to the church; fulfilling the prophecy of Pastor McKinnon that the Lord was going to bless the church. She stated, “He is going to send people from far and near.” The people came; some from Chicago, Florida, Fayetteville, Vander, and Fort Bragg. The church grew and became a well-organized body of people who remains faithful to services of the local assembly as well as the district and national assemblies.
In 2001, our beloved Pastor Alice McKinnon was called home to be with the Lord. Before she died, she gave her blessings to Elder Melvin (Deacon Melvin at the time) to carry on the church and preach what God says preach. Today, Elder Melvin proudly serves as the Pastor in Vander. We welcome everyone, regardless of age, gender or religious belief. This is a church where the love of God is shown to everyone that comes through the doors. You are invited to come and look on us; we have a very hospitable Usher Board, outstanding Youth Department, inspiring Men’s Choir, Youth Choir, and a unique Women’s Department. Come thou with us, and we will do thee good.
