Church History

In the early part of 1954, Elder Raymond F. Davis came to the little town of Latta, South Carolina where he met the late Mother Mary Lindsay. Mother Lindsay had established a small mission on a plot of land located on Allen Street in Latta.

After hearing Elder Davis speak at a church in Dillon, SC, Mother Lindsay extended an invitation to him to speak at her mission. Elder Davis declined her invitation to come and speak at that particular time because her mission could not accommodate over ten people. However, after talking with Elder Davis, Mother Lindsay decided to give him the plot of land she had if he would build a church. He agreed, and in 1954 he built the Highway Christian Church of Christ without having a member in the town of Latta. People would walk by and marvel at this man building this church. They asked him, “where are the members,” and his reply was “they are in the streets.” After completing the church, the opening was held one Sunday afternoon in May of 1954. The place was packed to its capacity, and the rest is history.

In 1957, Elder Davis resigned from the Highway Christian Church of Christ organization and chartered his own course, which was The Highway Church of Christ, Association.

On December 28, 1981, the original church located at 116 North Allen Street was totally destroyed by a gas explosion but God blessed us to rebuild the church in 1982.

In 1988, Bishop Davis was involved in an accident of fire in Boston, Massachusetts. After having miraculously recovered by the mercies of God, he was moved by the divine inspiration of God to put forth a resolution that The Highway Church of Christ, Association would become The Greater Highway Church of Christ, Incorporated.

February 2001, Bishop Davis and the members of The Greater Highway Church of Christ in Latta decided to sell the sanctuary on Allen Street and look for a tract of land to erect another church. Much to our surprise, the church quickly sold, and we held our last service there on Sunday, May 27, 2001. This was a bittersweet event for us, but we knew it was time to move on.

We began worshipping with Elder Ricky Jones and the Saints at The Greater Highway Church of Christ on East Dargen Street in Dillon on that following Monday night. We worshipped there for ten months and two weeks. On April 14, 2002, we opened our new sanctuary at 806 West Main Street, Latta, South Carolina.

We fondly remember some of the days of old and graciously appreciate the times of suffering. These are the things that have helped to make us strong and have given us some stability for these perilous times, and last and evil days. To God be the glory for all He has done!
